Retailers are under pressure to keep customers engaged, reduce theft, and manage operations across many locations while staying flexible enough to handle market changes. Isolated fixes rarely solve these challenges for long. Long-term success depends on how well systems are connected, managed, and built to evolve. The right infrastructure influences everything from how customers interact with a space to how efficiently teams operate behind the scenes.

Using Audiovisual Technology to Drive Customer Engagement

In-store engagement depends on how customers see, hear, and interact with their surroundings. Screens, speakers, and signage all shape how a space feels and how messages are delivered. Activo provides audio visual services designed to enhance promotions, guide customers, and support in-store communication.

Where needed, these systems are supported by structured cabling to ensure stable performance and seamless integration across the store. The goal is to create dependable environments where technology enhances the shopping experience without becoming a distraction.

Simplifying Operations Across Multiple Locations

Managing technology across multiple stores often involves dealing with inconsistent tools, manual updates, and fragmented oversight. Activo addresses this by implementing centralized control platforms that allow retail operators to oversee and adjust systems from a single point of access. Tasks like digital signage updates, environment settings, and equipment monitoring can all be coordinated remotely, reducing the need for in-person intervention and improving day-to-day efficiency.

Collecting the Right Data at the Right Time

Smart building infrastructure brings separate technology under one platform, making it easier to manage lighting, environmental controls, and digital systems across a retail environment. With integrated platforms in place, teams can track performance and make adjustments quickly—without relying on manual checks or site-by-site updates.

Increased visibility helps reduce downtime, streamline troubleshooting, and maintain consistent performance across all store locations.

Strengthening Security Without Adding Complexity

Maintaining a safe, secure environment is an ongoing challenge for retailers. With unified platforms that connect surveillance, access control, and real-time alerting, Activo simplifies how store teams manage security across locations.

These systems are adapted to each store’s layout and can be monitored through a single interface, removing the need to juggle disconnected tools. Teams gain clear visibility and faster response capabilities, without compromising the flow or atmosphere of the shopping experience.

Scaling Infrastructure Without Disruption

Adding new technology or updating store layouts shouldn’t require major infrastructure changes. Activo builds systems that are designed to grow with the business and support new devices and reconfigurations.

This makes it easier to respond to seasonal needs, shifting consumer behaviours, or long-term growth without compromising system reliability.

Coordinating Technology for Retail Operations

Activo combines audio visual solutions, centralized control, and integrated security systems into tailored packages that address the realities of retail work. From site assessments to national rollouts, each engagement is built around clear goals, technical precision, and long-term usability.

Teams benefit from having a single point of contact throughout planning, installation, and support, removing complexity and ensuring a consistent standard across locations.

Move Retail Forward with the Right Infrastructure

Improving in-store experience, managing technology across locations, and responding to changing demands all require the right foundation. Activo supports retailers with systems built for long-term performance and designed to reduce complexity, improve control, and scale alongside the business.

Manufacturing facilities across Canada are under growing pressure to upgrade their operations to increase production, improve efficiencies and ensure safety for their employees is at the forefront. As production becomes more connected and data-driven, facilities that rely on older systems are more likely to encounter inefficiencies, safety concerns, and compliance challenges.

Some organizations have postponed infrastructure improvements due to budget limitations or the belief that their current setup still meets the minimum requirements. But outdated systems reduce visibility, limit automation, and fall short of today’s safety and regulatory expectations. As technology becomes more essential to day-to-day operations, manufacturers without the right foundation are at greater risk of disruption.

The Risks of Inadequate Infrastructure

Technical gaps in infrastructure can quietly diminish a facility’s performance. Left unaddressed, these issues turn into operational setbacks, safety incidents, or compliance failures that can stop production entirely.

Reduced Operational Efficiency

Facilities that rely on disconnected or legacy systems often deal with slow communication, delayed decision-making, and poor visibility across teams. These problems limit productivity, interrupt workflows, and create unnecessary bottlenecks that impact delivery timelines and customer satisfaction. Without synchronized systems, even routine tasks like inventory checks or maintenance coordination can cause cascading delays.

Safety Oversights

Safety depends on fast, reliable information. Without centralized monitoring and alert capabilities, facilities may miss early warning signs of an incident. This puts workers at risk and can expose the business to liability. A lack of integrated systems also makes it harder to track access events, facility conditions, or equipment faults in real time.

Compliance Failures

Auditors and regulatory bodies increasingly expect access to real-time data, system logs, and secure digital records. Facilities without the right IT infrastructure can struggle to meet these requirements, making compliance more difficult and increasing the chance of penalties or halted operations. Manual data collection and siloed systems introduce risk and reduce the traceability needed to pass inspections.

Manufacturers that continue to operate with these vulnerabilities face growing pressure from internal teams, regulators, and clients to address them. Recognizing these risks is the first step toward building a safer, more resilient facility.

A Single Partner for Facility-Wide Technology

Activo works with manufacturers across Canada to implement infrastructure that supports safer, more connected, and more compliant operations. As a national provider, Activo delivers coordinated services across all locations, ensuring consistency, clear oversight, and minimal disruption, whether you’re upgrading one facility or standardizing systems across multiple sites.

Solutions include digital displays and conferencing systems for faster collaboration, surveillance and access control tools to support safer environments, and secure wireless networks that power IoT and automation, all built to meet the demands of industrial settings.

Here at Activo, we’re proud to work with some of the best in IT, Networking, and Telecommunications. Join us as we get to know our team members better, gathering insight into their career paths and what they love about Activo.

Get to Know Trevor Vowels, Business Manager of Audio-Visual

Trevor has been a vital member of the Activo team since 2020 after working alongside the team on several projects. As the Business Manager of Audio-Visual, Trevor oversees the A/V business and development alongside the sales team, ensuring that our field technicians are equipped to install successful designs. Based in our London, ON office, Trevor directly oversees the A/V team and has made significant contributions to our projects and clients in the past 4 years.

We spoke with Trevor to learn more about his journey at Activo, his proudest accomplishments, and what he enjoys most about his work.

Hi Trevor. It’s great to meet you! How did you get started at Activo?

I used to work with Activo from a different company, where we shared some projects. I met the team during that time, and when I moved on from my previous employment, Activo asked me for a meeting to discuss the development of their A/V department. That was in 2020, and I’ve been here ever since.

What is it that you do in your role?

I’m the Business Manager of A/V. I oversee the audiovisual business and development alongside the sales team. My role involves designing, developing, and programming our field technicians to ensure they can install designs successfully.

What has been your most meaningful accomplishment at work?

One of my most meaningful accomplishments was the successful installation we did with the township of East Zorra-Tavistock. We created a fully functional, integrated system with delegated microphone systems and a complete broadcasting setup for streaming. Working with the client from design to completion gave me a great sense of satisfaction. We also received feedback that of all the vendors East Zorra-Tavistock worked with in building their new town hall, the Activo team was the best. I pride myself on building relationships and working closely with clients, ensuring we provide top-notch communication and follow-through.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to join the Activo team or follow your career path?

Activo is a fantastic company, and the senior management team is well-involved in maintaining employee satisfaction. The future at Activo is bright, we are a growing company, and we have a great team. Of all the places you can choose to have a career, Activo is a great one.

For those interested in the A/V industry, I recommend looking into the AVIXA model, which sets the standards for the industry. The A/V industry is not massive in Canada, and the longer you’re in it, the more you recognize people. Relationships last, so if you’re getting into the industry, keep your eyes open and your handshakes warm.

Why do you love working at Activo?

I feel like the senior management team is very involved. There’s a lot of opportunity for growth, which is key for me at this point in my career. I’m given the freedom to try new things and have the support from the team when it’s needed.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

The one thing that always sticks out is that I’m a father of eight. We go camping often as a family, so it’s a very busy house! A/V is also my hobby, so I feel very lucky to be doing what I’m doing.

Here at Activo, we’re proud to work with some of the best in IT, Networking, and Telecommunications. Come with us to get to know our team members better, gathering insight into their career paths and what they love about Activo.

Get to Know Azher Mohammed, Senior ITS Network Expert

Azher Mohammed joined the Activo team nearly ten years ago and has been a critical member ever since. He is our Senior ITS Network Expert, supporting many of our clients in the management of networking, voice and collaboration, and wireless services. We’re proud to announce that Azher was named the winner of our 2023 Activo Recognition Award, having gone above and beyond in several ways over the years. We’re proud of all his work – his award was well deserved!

We spoke with Azher to get insights into what has kept him at Activo for the last decade, what makes him excited about his career, and to learn more about what drives his passion.

Hi Azher. Firstly, congratulations on your award!

Thank you so much. I didn’t expect the recognition award. I know at Activo we recognize individuals, but I was so surprised when I received the Recognition Program Award. I didn’t do anything at work looking for recognition, but it was amazing to see how management sees how I go above and beyond – I felt very lucky to receive it. It was an emotional moment for me.

How did you get started at Activo?

I arrived in Canada as an immigrant skilled worker with permanent residence with my family. I was working in IT and was looking for a new job in the field when I came across Activo. I really enjoyed the environment and the people I worked with –I felt a lot of positivity in the workplace and enjoyed that atmosphere. I’ve been with Activo ever since!

What is it that you do in your role?

My role is as a Senior ITS Network Expert. My specialization is in networking, voice-over IP’s, and wireless. This means I support the team in anything to do with the configuration of these items, including firewalls, phone systems, communications, access control, wireless surveys, and more. My team takes a look and figures out what is required for businesses to obtain these services, like how many access points need to be installed, etc.

I’m not just an expert in one area, but in many different fields, so I can provide insights for several different services.

How did you get started in IT?

Initially I went to school and got my Masters in Commerce – after completing that I wanted a career-oriented path that would drive me over the years. I was curious about IT and decided to take some courses, and I fell in love with the subject. From there, I built up my expertise and stayed in the field.

What advice would you give to someone looking to join the IT field?

I would say that IT is a challenging path – don’t choose it if you’re looking for a job where you can take it easy all the time. There’s a responsibility to learn everything you can about your field and keep up to date. Some days, you may have to work extra hours in times when there are switches or the network is down to keep your clients happy.

However, once you have a complete understanding of your area of focus, it gets much easier. Then, you can relax a little bit and know you have the expertise to move forward and solve problems as they arise. It’s a rewarding position once you put in the work, full of constant learning.

Why do you love working at Activo?

Activo is a great place to work, they do things differently from other businesses – the recognition program, for example. Upper management recognizes the work that everyone completes and highlights when you go above and beyond. It makes you feel good when you do extra work – not that you look for recognition, but rather that your managers recognize that work and value you for it.

Other businesses I’ve worked for in the past haven’t done that; knowing that you’re valued and compensated for the extra things that you do really separates Activo from other businesses.

Also, they understand and treat you like a person in the workplace. When emergencies arise, or I need to do something to help my family, there’s no problem. I have support to put my family first and care for their needs – that’s a value Activo shares with all its employees.

Lastly, do you have any hobbies you’d like to share?

Yes! I’ve recently started picking up some new skills – I started attending a gym and taking Zumba classes, which I really enjoy. It helps me lift my dopamine levels, which helps me think outside of the box every day. I think exercise is something that everyone should include in their regular routine.

Also, I’ve recently taken up guitar lessons as a hobby. I’m enjoying picking up and developing a new skill – I find it very rewarding. There’s no end of things to learn out there!

Successfully executing a national technology deployment is crucial for businesses looking to gain a competitive advantage through improved efficiency and innovation. They can be complex, requiring careful planning and execution to positively impact employee morale and productivity.

Let’s dig into the essential steps for a seamless business rollout, highlighting the critical role of IT network systems integrators like Activo. By aligning technology deployment with strategic goals, your business can navigate the challenges of national IT rollouts effectively, ensuring they are well-prepared for the future.

1.    Define Clear Objectives and Scope

When starting a rollout, it’s important to identify the needs of your business and set goals for what you wish to achieve. Understanding the specific problems your technology deployment aims to solve and the improvements you’re looking to make will help you understand the exact technology you’ll need to bring your project to life. A network systems integrator like Activo is critical in this step and will help clarify how to meet these goals.

Once these objectives are established, you can then define clear, measurable objectives for the rollout, including timelines and expected outcomes.

2.    Conduct a Pilot Program

Conducting a pilot program is the next critical step in your national rollout process. This involves choosing a few locations that best represent the diversity of your operations to test the rollout.

An integrator like Activo plays a key role here, assisting in the setup and installation to ensure seamless integration with systems and adjusting as needed. The pilot program allows you to gather detailed feedback from your team, identifying any issues or areas for improvement. Your integrator uses this feedback to refine the technology, training, and support processes, ensuring the rollout is optimized for success.

3.    Develop a Detailed Rollout Plan

Once the pilot program is complete, your integrator becomes a key partner in managing your rollout. They will outline a detailed plan for the complete rollout, including a realistic schedule, technical support needs, and infrastructure upgrades.

Creating a realistic schedule is crucial, considering information learned from the pilot program, to avoid past pitfalls and streamline the process. Your integrator also plays a key role in determining the resources—budget, personnel, equipment—required for each phase of the rollout, ensuring that every stage is well-supported and efficiently executed.

Your integrator will also plan for comprehensive training, ensuring all users and support teams are well-prepared to pick up the new technology.

4.    Ensure Your IT Infrastructure is Ready

During this critical phase, your integrator will evaluate your current network, hardware, and software. They implement any necessary upgrades or changes to support the new technology that will be added during the business rollout across all locations, ensuring the network is secure, scalable, and capable of handling the new system.

5.    Effective Communications

Effective communication is a cornerstone of any successful national technology deployment. It involves keeping all stakeholders, from executives to end-users, informed about the rollout plans, timelines, and what is expected of them. This transparency helps in managing expectations and fostering a sense of involvement and readiness for the upcoming changes. Additionally, effective change management strategies are vital for facilitating employee adaptation to the new technology, minimizing resistance and maximizing acceptance.

At Activo, we use our proprietary AIMS system for effective communications. AIMS is designed to provide regular updates and communications, ensuring stakeholders have access to the necessary documentation, updates, and insights throughout the rollout process. This continuous flow of information helps keep everyone informed and engaged through the rollout.

6.    Execute the Rollout

Once these steps are completed, it’s time to finally execute your business rollout! Adopting a phased rollout is recommended, as it manages the implementation effectively and ensures any issues that arise can be addressed quickly without affecting the project schedule.

At Activo, our dedicated team manages the installation and integration of your new technology. We’re also on hand to manage any troubleshooting that arises and minimize disruptions. This strategy ensures a smooth transition to the new system for operational continuity.

7.    Ongoing Support & Training

Once the rollout is launched, be sure that your team has access to immediate support at every location. Your integrator should be on-site to answer questions as they arise.

Post-deployment, we also offer technical support and can train your IT staff on how to use the new system. This ensures your team is equipped to handle support needs for the system and understands the technology thoroughly.

8.    Evaluate and Adjust

The last step in a successful national rollout is to evaluate and adjust the system. Once everything has been implemented, it’s time to collect user feedback from all locations to gauge the effectiveness of the technology. This is completed by measuring the technology against the initial objectives to better understand its impact and areas for improvement.

Based on this feedback, prepare to make iterative improvements to the systems, training programs, or support structures. This process of ongoing adaptation ensures your new system remains aligned with your business goals, fostering continuous improvement and maximizing the long-term benefits of the investment.

Here at Activo, we’re proud to work with some of the best in IT, Networking, and Telecommunications. Come with us to get to know our team members better, gathering insight into their career paths and what they love about Activo.

Get to Know Dustin Boyd, Project Support Specialist

Dustin Boyd joined the Activo team in 2018 and has been an active member of our team since. Currently a project support specialist, Dustin is in training to become a project manager and is completing certifications to take on this role in the future. An important member of our team, we’re proud to say Dustin was the 2022 Activo Employee of the Year and is a shining representation of what an Activo employee should be.

Dustin is currently a project support specialist, acting as a primary contact for one of our major clients. He is responsible for managing the quoting, project management, and support for many of our high-profile clients.

We spoke with Dustin to gather more insight into his growing career, his life at Activo, and to learn more about what makes him passionate about his job.

Hi Dustin. It’s great to meet you! How did you get started at Activo?

I started at Activo in 2018 after being approached by a recruiter who thought I would be a good fit with the company. I was working a job that required long hours away from my family at the time, and I was attracted to Activo’s family-oriented business approach. After my interview, I was offered a position on the team, and I’m proud to be here and have been growing since.

What is it that you do in your role?

I have a multi-faceted position, as I’m currently a project support specialist and a primary contact for one of our major clients while also completing certifications to start a new role as a project manager.

In my current role, I facilitate communications and project coordination between Activo and our clients. I manage the quoting process for new projects, working with the estimators and communicating the quotes back to the client to initiate project work. I’m then responsible for overseeing the workflow, project completion, and management from start to end.

I also help with backup for any repair contracts our client needs. As I mentioned, I’m also working on completing certification to move up as a project manager at Activo.

What is the process like as you train for this new role?

We’re all working together towards that goal of me attaining my certification for project management and then moving into that role at Activo. Activo has supported my ambition and helped me make time for my education while also building a structured approach to help me achieve this new position.

I am working with several project managers who provide education and direction and have mentors at Activo who have gone above and beyond to help me along the way.

A lot of larger companies make you feel like a number, but at Activo, they’re really good at understanding their team – knowing what people’s strengths are and accommodating those to best support team members and their own business. They make the time to look for what people want and their goals and prioritize them.

What has been your most meaningful accomplishment at work?

I’m very proud of a recent project we obtained, as it wasn’t, in fact, a project that we won at first. One of our competitors had picked it up but had been dropping the ball with communicating with our client.

The client reached out to me, as we have a unique partnership and multiple projects with them, highlighting the issues and requesting that we help them out immediately. I took on the project, and before long, the client was turning all projects of this kind to us thanks to the work we completed. Our relationship with the client and the work we completed turned a small project into a national rollout with over 700 locations, which wouldn’t have been possible without the work we did to build the relationship and the high-quality work we’ve performed over the years.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to join the Activo team?

For my role, I’d say to be ready to have conversations with people. It’s really important to be able to reach out to people you’ve never spoken to before and be able to carry on a conversation. In the project support specialist role and in the project management role, you meet a lot of new people on a regular basis; you can’t be shy.

What’s your favourite part of working at Activo?

Most importantly, the biggest part of Activo I love is our close-knit community. Even while working remotely, I still have relationships with other teams I’ve worked with in the past. We all communicate and chat with each other on a regular basis, whether about work or just casually, and that helps us build lasting relationships that have helped all of us grow in our roles and as people.
